Although this small Mayfly has been overlooked in all fly fishing literature, it's very important to anyone fishing the Delaware river system from mid July to early September. To not even mentioned in passing in any fly fishing literature comes as a surprise when you consider what constitutes a good hatch for dry fly fishing. S. serratoides produces large sustained evening hatches, the duns drift on the water for a considerable distance before flight, the essence of a great hatch for dry fly fishing. Giving credit where it's due this insect may have been over looked because of it's seemingly limited location, or it closeness in appearance to a small Baetis. Hatches seem to be concentrated on the West Branch from Hale Eddy down to the junction pool on the main stem. Given the diverse water conditions of the upper Delaware S. serratoides could very well flourish elsewhere in the system.
