Pteronarcys is the largest stonefly in North America. P. dorsata nymphs are detritivores and herbivores with a diet consisting mainly of deteriorating leaves, and plant debris.

Hatches begin mid March to early April depending on the weather conditions. Due to the fact that P. dorsata has a three year growth cycle nymphs are present in a variety of sizes at any given time. Fishing fast riffles with a nymph imitation in an assortment of sizes can produce fish threw out the season.
